Here Comes the Mountain West

This week the Utes face two teams from the 'ol Mountain West Conference. Tonight we're in Boise to take on the Broncos; and Saturday we're back home to face the Fresno State Bulldogs:

Boise State: This game scares me. Last year it took a complete effort and a Majerus memorial to beat the Broncos at home. Boise basically returns its entire team this season, including preseason all-MWC selections Derrick Marks (18.5ppg) and Anthony Drmic (21.5ppg/5.5rpg). Marks had 18 points against us last year; Drmic, on the other hand, got in foul trouble early and finished with just three points on 1/6 shooting.

The Broncos are 6-0, which is their best start in history, and they're expected to compete for the MWC crown. Their coach is long time Gonzaga assistant, Leon Rice.

Finally, keep an eye on senior forward Ryan Watkins (10.2ppg/9.8rpg). He's the grandson of former Utah great, Billy McGill. And stay tuned to this blog for more on the life and times of Billy the Hill -- coming soon.

Fresno State: The Bulldogs are feeling good about themselves after winning two overtime games in two days. The first was on Saturday against Cal State-Bakersfield. Then on Sunday, they bested the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona. All in all, they stand at 6-3 and appear well poised to finish in 9th place in the MWC, as predicted in the preseason conference poll.

Fresno State is led this year by Marvelle Harris (18.0ppg/5.8rpg) and Cezar Guerrero (14.7ppg/4.6apg). Guerrero sat out last season after transferring from Oklahoma State, where he started six games and averaged 5.6ppg as a true freshman.

  2. Drmic is a spazz. The guy totally lost his cool and headbutted one of our players (forget which one) during the game last year.
